Major Musical Disappointments in January 2017

The first 30 days of the year have given us a good collection of music albums, in particular in the rock scene (with Japandroids, AFI, Cloud Nothings, You Me at Six, and Dropkick Murphys). As always, though, there have been a few highly anticipated discs that ultimately disappointed our initial expectations.

Two albums, in particular, represent the major disappointments in the first month of the year:

1) Machine Messiah by Sepultura.

The fourtheenth studio release by the Brazilian metal band is really poor and frankly I found it hard to even choose one good song to archive in my metal playlists. The album shows some sincere attempt to explore different musical territories, but the main problem lies in the now acclaimed inability to write nice songs, something that may remain and resonate in the listener’s head. Sorry to say, but the comparison between their last few albums and the legendary productions of the past (i.e. the era of the Cavalera brothers) is dramatic.

“If Machine Messiah weren’t a Sepultura album, its blend of chugging riffs and zealous guitar solos would qualify it as a passable thrash metal record. But in the context of the band’s incredible catalogue and legacy, it just doesn’t pass muster.” (by Exclaim)

2) Return to the Sauce by Infected Mushroom.

At this point in their long musical career it might be natural that the albums from the electronic duo from Israel begin to show signs of fatigue. They are one of the best-selling groups in Israeli music history in terms of both domestic and international sales, and some of their albums of the past have heavily influenced the electronic music scene. Return to the Sauce hosts a collection of fairly weak psytrance songs, none of which destined to become a classic. If it was their innovation that turned them into a success electronic band,  unfortunately today we must note that there are very few signs of their talents.
