Half of the month review: the Best in Rock in February 2017

The first two weeks of February have been absolutely positive with regard to the rock music scene and there were some very good outputs in different genres: progressive, punk, psycheledic and alternative.

At the moment the band that impressed us the most is Blackfield, which is the collaborative music project by prolific and legendary Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) and Israeli rock singer Aviv Geffen. Their new album, Blackfield V, presents an accessible but still valuable collection of progressive rock tracks, enriched by a variety of different sounds and atmospheres. Embedded in a few songs we hear a clear reference to the progressive rock of the 70s but the disc, in general terms, is not nostalgic or unispired. The sound of the band displays also some nice evolution compared to earlier works and the album at the end is really interesting and enjoyable.

In opposition to the elegance and sophistication of the Blackfield, we had the anger and the energy of Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes. The a British hard rockers published their second album , Modern Ruin, which follows their debut in 2015. This record impressed us for the number of memorable songs that it contains, we thus expect that the disc will remain in our music readers for a very long time.

As already anticipated in a previous post, we enjoyed a lot the advance songs published by Grails, the instrumental group from Portland which plays intriguing combination of experimental and psychedelic rock. The band is now releasing their new album, Chalice Hymnal, which is the sixth of their career and also the first in the last six years.

Last, but not least, we can’t forget to mention the funny and energetic Menzingers, the rock band from Pennsylvania that hase just released their fifth album, After the Party. The songs on this record don’t stand out for their originality, but as a whole the album surely belongs to the group of good rock music releases that marked the first days of the year.
