February 2017, Best Indie Pop Album: Little Fictions by Elbow

Early this year, as soon as we saw the list of planned releases for the incoming months, we assumed that almost certainly the new album by Sun Kil Moon would dominate our chart for the indie pop / songwriters category – for the whole year. A few months later, however, after having listened to the last work by Mark Kozelek’s project we must confess that it didn’t impress us as we expected and today, in fact, even the monthly chart has another winner. The best songs we heard this month came from a group of English alternative rock veterans, the Elbow, which published the seventh studio album of their long career, Little Fictions.

In absolute continuity with their latest works, Little Fictions contains a refreshing compilation of elegant and enjoyable pop & soft rock songs (“tastefully simple trakcs”, as someone says). Simple but not trivial, because each one of the songs on the album shows a certain commitment of the group in enriching the melodies with focused arrangements and – where necessary – some experimentation. The band has always shown an undeniable talent for songwriting, which is confirmed here in their last album. Even the abrupt departure of drummer Richard Jupp, who left the band (after 25 years!) didn’t affect too much the style and the sound of the band.

We definitely enjoyed this work, in particular for its most melodic and intimate songs. Certainly the disc isn’t boring or pretentius, two adjectives that unfortunately we can associate to another album with higher expectations…

Guerino’s rating: 7 / 10.

Elbow’s latest deepens their formula—rich, sweeping rock songs about melancholy and love—with a dreamy sense of loss and time passing. (Pitchfork)

In a career spanning more than two decades, Elbow have always taken things at their own pace, and this shows in Little Fictions’ pleasing rhythms. (Independent)
